West highland terrier rescue florida2/7/2024 Naturally we can't rehome a dog which we know has bitten, is unsocialized or untrained until we have worked with them extensively and are confident that they can be now be managed in the experienced Terrier home. As previously experienced in rescue, these rescues often present with temperament issues which need experienced behavior training care/help and to be expected take up a foster care homes for quite a while. This creates a backlog of unadoptable rescues and our foster homes not available to quickly turn around Westies In Need. The ones who are coming in generally have neglected major health issues, medical and behavior problems and they must go into our long-term foster care homes. There are still far fewer dogs coming in than pre-pandemic, and speaking to other breed rescues it would seem that the situation is pretty generally widespread. They are coming in from owner surrenders, Vet contacts and shelter pulls. We are now receiving rescues, doing adoption placements, performing in-home checks and accepting rescues again. Our organization has a long association with the WHWT Club of California and WHWT Club of America.īRAVO and KUDOS to those who make a difference in the life of a rescued Westie. Our breed gives such joy, laughter and often tears along the paw-path of life. We applaud our hundreds of dedicated volunteers, adopters and loving Westie owners who give back to the breed. We are the oldest and largest independent Westie Rescue within the state and possibly the West Coast, garnering a stellar reputation along the way as relentless caretakers of the breed. Our rescues come from every walk of life owner surrendered, shelter found, abused, abandoned, neglected, puppy mill raids, professional referrals or otherwise - any Westie-in-Need. As our Mission Statement indicates, we are active in providing public breed education, rescue services, foster rehabilitation, animal training, terrier knowledgeable, and often times, life-saving medical care, and placement in approved forever homes. While most Westies enjoy favored status as family pets, they still compete in earth dog trials, and many still clear out moles or mice in their backyards.Westie Rescue of California and seven Western states, is a charitable and educational private independent not-for-profit organization. Everything from rats to foxes was fair game and that is still true today. The white dogs were easier to spot in the fields, and this was their big advantage.Īs with all the terrier breeds, the West Highland was bred as a vermin hunter. It appears that the Scottish terrier, cairn terrier and West Highland white terrier all came from common stock with different fanciers culling different colors. The breed had its type established by Colonel Malcom of Poltalloch in the 1800s and, in fact, the West Highland white terrier was called the Poltalloch for a while and then the Roseneath terrier after Colonel Pollatoch's farm. Back as far as King James I in the early 1600s, the tough little white dogs were known and admired as the dogs of Argyleshire. The West Highland white terrier has a variety of names from its places of origin in the British Isles. Grooming can be as simple as having the dog clipped a couple of times a year or as time consuming as hand stripping a show dog's coat. ![]() They enjoy human company, but you must socialize them to children and insist they accept handling and grooming. West Highland White Terriers do well at many dog sports including obedience, agility and earth dog trials. Terriers in general should start training as soon as possible and with creative and positive methods, backed up by a firm hand. Westies are alert and will alarm bark to defend their homes and families. Left to their own devices, they will excavate your yard and bark while doing so. These are dogs still close to their roots of hunting and do best with plenty of exercise. These are hardy little dogs, often living well into their teen years.Īll Westies should be socialized early and continuously, especially to other dogs and to other pets. Too much indulging in rich treats can lead to a very heavy dog. Terriers in general are easy dogs to keep, bred to exist on scraps and their own hunting skills.
